Happy Mother’s Day week. I’m not a mother, but appreciate everyone who is.
Shout out to my mom who subscribes to the blog. Thanks for being such a supportive, fun-loving, wise mother. I’m glad your influence is woven into my life.
Mother’s Day is a great time to buy your mother a personalized gift centered around story. Whether you buy her a physical book, ebook, or create a book, these gestures can be meaningful.
This month, we’re exploring intimate ways to share story with our mothers, grandmothers, or even our families. The older we get, the more we think about leaving a legacy for the next generation. Maybe you want to share your mother’s story for your children or grandchildren. Maybe you want to share your own story.
Either way, it’s amazing how much we learn when we listen to our mother’s story even if we’ve heard it before. When you’re commemorializing it into a written format, we tend to investigate further into the stories. Learn the deeper, sometimes hidden, meanings. Explore the intricate details. And discover something about our mother we didn’t know before.
When I was helping my parents write their memoir, I felt like I was discovering my parents again. I heard new stories, discovered deeper meanings behind the ones I’ve already heard, and found out what lay below the surface in my parents’ hearts and minds. The experience itself carried meaning.
And this month, we’ll hear from two guest posts about sharing family stories.
But for this post, I wanted to provide ideas for Mother’s Day gifts.
Fiction:
- Christian fiction
Great adventure set in the 1800’s chronicling a woman’s journey along the Oregon Trail. Adventure, romance, and faith! (Book 1 of the Western Dreams series.) The author is my friend who also guest posted on this blog.
Amusing but touching saga of a southern family and how they’re preparing for the annual family reunion. (Book 1 of the Bucklin Family Reunion Series.) I met Debby at American Christian Fiction Writer’s conference a few years ago.)
- Historical fiction
A novel based on true events of the author’s grandfather and his family. Set during the onset of World War II, the story follows the lives of this Jewish family living predominately in Poland. Such an action-packed narrative, I hardly believed this was based on a true story. (I heard her share about her family at a local bookstore. She had a slideshow of the surviving family and their progeny. Very moving.)
- Journal:
I like the idea of gifting your mom a journal with answers and prompts to complete on her time. Great way to discover deeper stories, memories, and insight about your mom.
These are the gift ideas for today, but next week, we’ll have more. Happy Mother’s Day week!
And if you have any unique Mother’s Day gift ideas, please share in Comments below. Thank you.
